GOGRAPHICAL LOCATION

 Karabük is in the Western Black sea Region, with Bartın in the north (80 Km), Kastamonu in the east (112 Km) Zonguldak in the west (102 Km) Çankırı in the southeast (193 Km.) Bolu in the southwest (134 Km.). Karabük is the centre of the region and is 215 kms to Ankara the capital and 396 kms to İstanbul the biggest city in Turkey.

History

Karabük was a 13 house avenue of Safranbolu Öğlebeli Village until 1937 and was on the train route between Ankara and ZOnguldak. Because of accessibility with train and being near to coal mines it was decided that an iron and steel factory should be built there. In 3rd April 1937 with the instruction of Atatürk, İsmet İnönü started the construction of Karabük Iron-Steel Factory which is the main income source of the people still today.
Karabük became the 78th province of Turkey in 6 June 1995 with the merge of Çankırı’s Ovacık district, Zonguldak’s Yenice, Safranbolu and Eflani districts. Karabük has 6 districts, one town and 277 villages. The biggest land of Karabük is the mountains of the Northern Anatolian Mountains. These are fold mountains. These are no more than 2000 metres. There is a wide land of mountains in the north west of Karabük. In this region which is the continuation of Küre Mountains there are Çiğdem-Boyunduruk-Tekirdağ-Üçbel-Döneğen-Çanakçı peaks and Başköy Mountains which are 1400 metres in average. Around Yenice, which is the continuation of Bolu Mountains, the most important peak is Keçikıran with 1400 metres in altitude.
The most important highlands in Karabük are Avdan, Dede, Sorkun, Uluyayla, Göktepe, Sarıçiçek and Boduroğlu highlands.Canyons take an important place in the natural beauties of Karabük. Mostly with the separation of lime stones in Safranbolu these are formed. İncekaya, Düzce, Tokatlı and Sakaralan Canyons are the popular canyons in the region. Şeker Canyon which is in Yenica has a length of 6.5 kms.Bulak (Mencilis) and Hızar Caves are the other beauties. Turkey’s 4th biggest cave Bulak has carstic formations and an underground streamwith its 6.502 metres length. Moreover, there is a cave with 61 pavements entrance in Sipahiler village.

The main river of Karabük is Filyos River. Araç and Soğanlı Streams are a branch of this river in the Karabük lands.
Forests are very extensive in Karabük. According to forest average Karabük is at the top of the list in Turkey with 68.8% forest areas.
